Groovy revival by St. Vincent

Daddy’s Home, St. Vincent’s sixth album, celebrates its first anniversary today. In 2021, it sounded like an old 70’s hit. Time Oddity listened to it for you.

The cover of the album sets the tone: Acidulous title with curved letters on a black & white photograph of Annie Clark. It doesn’t leave indifferent. The singer has made a dazzling comeback after a 3-year break. Daddy's Home by St. Vincent takes us back to the music of the 70's with its funk and soul sounds.

MODERN RENAISSANCE OF THE 70’S From the beginning, Annie Clark makes us nostalgic. With Pay Your Way In Pain, it’s almost like listening to David Bowie. Groovy sounds, celestial and saturated voices, synthesizers... St. Vincent doesn't stop there. She is influenced by leading artists of the time, such as Simon & Garfunkel or Sheena Easton. Down and Out Downtown and Live In The Dream taste just like early Pink Floyd. One could almost believe it. All the elements are there to revive the wild decade of the 70’s. The album was released on May 14, 2021, but it feels like the summer of '75.

DADDY, NOT AT HOME It’s never the same atmosphere with St. Vincent. This sixth studio album is perhaps the most personal and the most sincere, despite all the staging. Annie Clark shares a fragment of her childhood, marked by abandonment. The record is actually inspired by the story of her father who was involved in a financial scandal in 2010. He has been convicted for twelve years and has just been released three years ago. The singer decided to take up the story in her own way: with lightness and nostalgia, which makes the album dramatic and somewhat addictive.

Since Masseduction in 2017, her fifth album with more complex and experimental tones, St. Vincent has radically changed her register. That's what we miss a bit in Daddy's Home. One thing’s for sure: Annie Clark knows how to keep her part of mystery. She never plays the same character in each album. This one has so many secrets to reveal. Daddy's Home is a fascinating journey through time that is accessible to all, but especially to Time Oddity readers.
