The rebellious fashion trends from 1973

Updated: Jun 3, 2022

When we talk about the 70s, we already imagine a colorful and Bohemian lifestyle. For sure, the 70s style and music were influenced by the peace & love movement. Fashion is the direct expression of the hippies' legacy.

The make-up

In the 60s, women were obsessed with big eyes, they were using a huge amount of eyeliner and very long eyelashes to create that doll look. In 1973, eyes were not that highlighted anymore, but still the mean area for make-up. Women were using a lot of bright and colorful eyeshadows and still doing thick layers of mascara. The eyebrows remained very thin and needed to be painted with a brown or black pen.

What about hair? Well, there were two main trends: loose curly or very long and straight hair. Both women and men wore long hair at this time. This hairstyle was popular among young people protesting again the Vietnam War. The hippies wore long hair and long beards, in contrast to the short hair of the American military. Men also had long mutton chop sideburns and mustaches.

Clothing style Yes! No matter what you wear, it had to be as colorful as possible! Clothes were mostly designed with prints and paisleys! Bell Bottom pants, hip huggers, earth shoes, clogs, tie-dye t-shirts, and gypsy dresses were popular. Mini dresses and miniskirts were very fashionable among young girls, but long dresses were also in every wardrobe in 1973. Hippies were obsessed with Tie & Dye. Against consumerism, they were creating their clothes or buying them from fripperies. Peasant blouses with wide sleeves, knit tops, and tank tops rounded out a wide variety of styles.

Why so extra? One answer: peace & love movement! Hippies appeared in the late 60s to revolt again traditional values. Young people didn’t want to be a part of the conservative generation, they wanted freedom! Being free and pacifist was a way of life. Hippies tried to break the codes and that revolutionary spirit affected the fashion industry so much.

And now? Hippies introduced us to jeans, which were only worn by working-class people. for the past 40 years, everyone has been wearing jeans as casual clothing. In the mid-2000s, the Bohemian chic was inspired by hippies’ dresses. Nowadays, we can observe that the Gen-Z are re-appropriating some hippies' aesthetics like hip hugger jeans and knits tripped crop tops.
